Crisis: Frequent power failures in Dehiwela

View(s):

Residents and business establishments in Dehiwela area have been experiencing frequent power failures, sometimes five times a day since the change in ministers some time back. During the tenure of the former minister power supply in this area was smooth and CEB personnel was managing and maintaining the electricity supply efficiently. Since late it has deteriorated to such an extent last month two whole working days was lost to business establishments as unannounced power cuts were imposed from 8am to 5pm. For example on one particular Monday, the power cut was from 8am to 5pm, the very first working day of the week.

SME entrepreneurs who were subjected to a massive price hike in electricity expected the service to improve but the opposite has happened and some businesses are laying-off employees to cut costs so they could stay afloat. When consumers call the Breakdown Centre, a rude CEB official says “you are not the only one complaining but (we) will put it right when they (we) can”. When asked for the DGM (South) or Area Engineer’s telephone numbers we are informed they have been instructed not give their numbers but to go to their office and complain. If this sorry state of affairs continues in the CEB, Dehiwela most business establishments will go bankrupt.
We earnestly appeal to the new lady minister to put some order into the CEB, Dehiwela area electricity supply so consumers could go about their work without frequent interruptions.
