The INFOTEL 2013 exhibition, to be held starting October 24 at the Sri Lanka Exhibition and Convention Centre (SLECC), will be the best place for Sri Lankans to experience new technology locally, be it hardware, software or training, according to the event’s organising committee chairman Chinthaka Wijewickrama.

Speaking at the official launch of INFOTEL 2013, on Wednesday, at the Galadari hotel in Colombo, Mr. Wijewickrama also indicated that, because exhibitions had changed a lot since the beginning of INFOTEL in 1992, which visitors attended as it was their only opportunity to see new technology, the onus was to now shift to showing how technology could enhance peoples’ lives. From farmers getting the prices of vegetables online to libraries no longer being the sole resource for acquiring knowledge, the Internet had changed the core function of exhibitions.

He also noted that new features of this year’s exhibition include participating countries, of which about 20 are expected, being given the opportunity to showcase their new technology for locals, as well as an area for mobile applications (apps) to be displayed.
Meanwhile, according to a statement released to the media at this launch, there are over 100,000 visitors expected over the four days of INFOTEL 2013. In addition, it was also revealed that the exhibition would give “special attention” to the areas of education, healthcare and medical science, transportation, tourism, agriculture and communication. Further, it was also indicated that these industries were being highlighted because they showed “aggressive growth” and, as such, it was important to show how IT could be used to improve efficiencies in these sectors.

At the same time, it also emerged that other areas highlighted at the exhibition, based on the 250 stalls planned for INFOTEL 2013, will include Social Media, Green Computing, Gaming, Cloud Computing, Virtualisation, Mobile Apps, Business Intelligence and ERP, Cyber Security, Business and Knowledge Process Outsourcing, Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity, Data Centres, Back Process Outsourcing, Office Automation, etc.
