How good is Angelo as captain?

After a rollercoaster campaign in both the ICC Champions Trophy and the triangular series in the West Indies, many have called into question the performance and decision-making of skipper Angelo Mathews. So is Mathews too young for such a huge responsibility and is he relying too much on the old warhorses of Sri Lankan cricket?

I think he is mature enough to captain the team. He has led various junior sides before and looking into the future he is definitely the most suitable player to lead the team. He uses the services of Mahela, Kumar and Dilshan because they are players with a lot of experience and he takes onboard what they have to say. - Anura Tennakoon (Former Sri Lanka cricket captain)

He is definitely depending on the seniors too much and his on-field decisions have not been good. He did not use Malinga well in the previous match and that ended up costing Sri Lanka the game. - Ashwin Canagaraj (Student)

He is still young, people should give him some time. He has played very well for Sri Lanka and he is a genuinely good batsman and allrounder. - Gamini Perera (Cricket coach)

Mathews still has more time to gain experience and develop. We can’t judge him from two or three tournaments. He is not overly reliant on seniors; at the moment Sanga and Mahela are giving him their support. Right now there is no better candidate than him to be captain. - Gayan Wijekoon (Former national player)

Mathews is a good player. All the players who are better than Mathews have already had and left the captaincy. So I feel that Mathews is a good choice. Sometimes winning and losing is about luck and at the moment he is terribly unlucky. - K. D Jayalath (Businessman)

Mathews is very young and he is very good but he lacks the experience needed to captain a side. He needs more time. Sometimes he collapses under the pressure. I think Sanga or Mahela is more suitable for the captaincy. Mathews is also not performing well - J.G Kelum (Security guard)

At the moment he is a little immature but I think he has a mind of his own and is capable. He has played a leadership role when he captained St. Joseph’s so he can do it. We should give him more time. - Leo Wijesinghe (Club cricket official)

I think Mathews is doing what Sanga and Mahela are saying because they have been in the captain’s shoes before. But Mathews is good for the captaincy. - Prasanna Udesh (Restaurant worker)

I think he needs a bit more time to perform. The seniors are helping him out but I don’t think he is over-reliant on them; he is still young. We also don’t have any other option for captain and the three other seniors, Mahela, Sanga and Dilshan have already filled the post. Shanaka Ravel (Business Consultant)

In my opinion he is a good player and among the seniors in the team he is the best for the job because he is young. He still has plenty of time and I think he is very capable of doing a good job. - Shivantha Dissanayake (Student)
