Four police teams were deployed yesterday in and around the Matale area after a gang robbed a gem merchant of his jewellery, gems and cash amounting to Rs. 15 million. The gang had posed off as a team of police officers looking for a criminal. Laggala Officer In Charge, Priyantha Gunasekara told the Sunday Times they had gathered sufficient information and were expecting to make an early breakthrough.

However upto last afternoon no arrests had been made. One of the gang members had reportedly called the gem merchant and told him that he was a sergeant from the Naula Police and that they would be coming to his area in search of a criminal.

“They told me they would be visiting my house as well. Around 8.30 they called to say they were at my gate. One of them wore a camouflage uniform similar to those worn by security forces. They told me they were from the Anti-Vice Strike Force from Walana, Panadura and wanted to search the place for a pistol which I had reportedly brought from overseas,” the businessman said.

As soon as they entered the premises they handcuffed him and tied the hands of his children and wife before robbing the place, the businessman said. “After they robbed gems and jewellery they demanded money. I handed over Rs. five million to them,” he said.
