Businessman arrested for pirating and selling GPS software

A businessman who allegedly copied a software used for a Global Positioning System (GPS) installed in vehicles, and sold it to customers, has been arrested by the Cyber Crimes Division of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), a senior police officer said.

The arrest came after a number of customers complained to the original company which had introduced the system. A check carried out by the company revealed that the stolen software had been installed in a similar system and sold.

The company had complained to the CID that the software they had developed with information and location of all important schools, roads, state and private buildings and other important information.

The company complained they had spent over Rs 30 million to update the information and had sold it to over 150 companies. “The company found their sales dropping and another company had copied their data and selling it illegally,” he said.
