Port fire: Legal action against importer of chemical

View(s):

Action is to be filed against the company which imported a hazardous chemical without properly declaring it, resulting in last week’s fire at the Colombo Port on May 24, Ports and Highways Deputy Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardena told the Sunday Times. He said the chemical which was to be stored with other hazardous cargo was stored with the general cargo, sparking off the fire.

Mr Abeygunwardena said the cargo which contained the imported chemical had no markings indicating that they were transporting it. “It is an international policy to have a warning sign when transporting a dangerous substance. As a result of the damage, the Colombo port incurred a loss of Rs. 50 million,” the deputy minister said.

He said action would be filed in a local court against the foreign company that brought this chemical.
