Sri Lanka’s ambitious aim to launch its fully owned satellite in 2016 becomes a reality with the signing of the ‘In Orbit Delivery Contract” for “SupremeSAT-2″between the SupremeSAT and China Great Wall Industry Corporation, top official of the company said.

SupremeSAT’s chairman .R.M. Manivannan said in a statement that this US$215 million contract was signed with the China Great Wall Industry Corporation offering the Design, Manufacture and Launching tasks of “SupremeSAT-2″ to that company this week. President Mahinda Rajapaksa and the Chinese President Xi Jinping witnessed the contract signing, he revealed.

Earlier “SupremeSAT-1″ a joint effort of SupremeSAT and Chinasatcom was launched successfully in China on November 27.
That satellite by last week had successfully completed its “In Orbit Tests” and has been positioned in its desired “orbital slot” – 87.5 Degrees East, he added.

“Now that the launch and positioning of the (earlier) satellite are a success, we will finalise our commercial contracts and start to receive the revenues as early as September 2013,” he added.

The new project will be a combination of EXIM financing and supplier credit further supported by pre-launch sales contracts, he disclosed.
