Hotels, supermarkets and mega shopping malls in Colombo and the suburbs may have to stop charging parking fees in future under new guidelines by the Western Provincial Council (WPC).

WPC Chief Minister Prasanna Ranatunge said this would also apply to commercial establishments in Colombo and Gampaha district following the unanimous passage of a private members motion presented by UNP provincial councillor Niroshan Padukka seeking to do away with the fees charged for parking of vehicles at vehicle parks in commercial establishments in the Western Province.

The next step would be to put forward the proposal to the advisory committee of the council. Later with the approval of the council and the central government it will be directed to the Commissioner of local authorities in the Western Province to devise necessary regulations to implement it, he disclosed.

PC Member Mr. Padukka said customers are charged parking fees from owners of commercial buildings in the Western Province when such facilities are mandatory and should be provided free.

Vehicle parks are part of the approval plan of a building permit and are free to use by visitors. Hence selling these facilities is an illegal act, he added.

Mr. Padukka said that some of those institutions even charge money from customers for the use of toilets which is also illegal.
