Fifteen people including former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian Selvarajah Kajendran were arrested yesterday in Mannar on allegations that they were planning to commemorate the death anniversary of former LTTE leader Velupillai Prabahakaran.

Party members said Mr. Kajendran, now a member of the Tamil National People’s Alliance, and others were commemorating the civilians killed in the final stages of the conflict. The party’s legal advisor Visvalingam Manivannan was among those arrested.

Police said the arrests were made following information that several people were commemorating the death of the LTTE leader at a state building.  Police claimed they had found Prabhakaran’s poster and a banner in the possession of one of those arrested.
