Mobitel, which has a 19-year presence in Kandy, last week launched a news alert service for Kandy residents.

The service would be free till February 28 and thereafter a fee Rs 30 would be charged. The news alert is both English and Sinhala.Governor of the Central Province Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, who spoke at the launch, said that in a changing world such advancements in technology and news (delivery) have become an essential feature. He also added that the media should be also more responsible

The service was launched jointly with Media Vision (Pvt) Ltd which pioneered a bilingual (English and Sinhala) monthly journal newspaper titled ‘The Kandy News’, 18 years ago. The Kandy News carries region-specific news and news analysis which is of interest to local residents, but does not get adequate coverage by the national media. This collaboration enables Mobitel customers to subscribe and receive this information in the form of an SMS news alert in either English or in Singlish (Sinhala text written in English script).
