An evening of carnatic music and Bharatha Natyam dance

A ‘Sangeetha Narthana Mathuram’- an evening of carnatic music and Bharatha Natyam dance will be held in commemoration of the 69th birth anniversary of Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam on January 31 at the British School Auditorium, Colombo 8 from 6.30-8.30 p.m.

The carnatic music recital will be performed by Sangeetha Kalanidhi Dr. Navaratnam and two vocalists (all from Jaffna), accompanied by four musicians on the mridangam, violin, kanjira and morsing.

RASSL lecture: Foreign Trade in Ancient Sri Lanka

A lecture by Dr. Malini Dias, Vice President, Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka on ‘Ridiyagama: An Entrepot of Foreign Trade in Ancient Sri Lanka 2nd Century CE – 10th Century CE’ will be held on Monday, January 28 at 5 p.m. at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Dr. Dias was former Deputy Commissioner and Director of Epigraphy and Numismatics of the Department of Archaeology, Sri Lanka and holds a Ph.D. in Epigraphy, School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. All are welcome.

Lecture on Lankan freshwater fishes

Deputy Director of the Sri Lanka Customs Samantha Gunasekera , author of the book ‘Export trade of Indigenous freshwater fishes of Sri Lanka’ will deliver an illustrated lecture on ‘Freshwater Fishes of Sri Lanka- their export trade and conservation’.

The lecture under the auspices of the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society of Sri Lanka will be held at the Organisation of Professional Associations, (OPA), 275/75, Prof. Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha, off Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 7. All are welcome.

Winner of Seethawakabimanai’ Awards 

The ‘Seethawaka Abiman’ festival was celebrated at Padukka M.M.V. under the patronage of Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa recently. The ‘Seethawakabimanai’ Awards, which are presented annually were presented this year to Thushan Jeewantha who was selected for the Presidential Award and also for the Geneva Golden medal for his new invention of the machine for coin counting. He received the award from Minister Rajapaksa. Patron of Seethawaka Abimana, Minister of Water Supply and Drainage Dinesh Gunawardena also participated at this ceremony.

Gnanawimalarama temple foundation stone laying ceremony

The foundation stone laying ceremony for the Gnanawimalarama temple, at Gnanawimalarama Road, Dematagoda was held recently. The chief guest was founder of the Pragna Pradeepa concept and Western Provincial Councillor Jayantha de Silva. He is seen here with the Chief Incumbent of the Galle temple Gnanasiri Thera.

Debut art exhibition a riot of colour 

‘Colourful Breeze’, Akashya Jayakarunaharan’s first joint art exhibition was held in mid-January. Akashya, a student of Stafford International School, has been studying art under the guidance of her teacher R. Kouwshigan. The picture shows Akashya, and her father with CEO of Odel Unlimited Ms. Otara Gunawardena at the exhibition.

Industrial Technology Institute appoints new Director/CEO

Dr. Sirimal Premakumara Galbada Arachchige, a senior research scientist at the Industrial Technology Institute has been appointed the new Director/CEO of this premier research institute formerly known as the Ceylon Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (CISIR).

Dr. Premakumara is well known for his research work in biologically active natural products, molecular medicine and drug research, especially breakthrough KASPER technology for kithul and the medicinal properties of kothalahimbuti, Binkohomba, cinnamon and indigenous rice varieties.

He studied at Royal College Colombo and graduated from the University of Colombo. He holds a PhD in Chemical Biology and had his post-doctoral training in nutrition biochemistry and biotechnology.

He is the recipient of many higher fellowships which includes the Presidential award, National S&T award, Prof. Chandrasena Memorial Award from the Institute of Chemistry and the Talented Scientist award from the University of Tirupathi, India.

He has authored over 150 research publications and was the President of the Institute of Biology, Sri Lanka in 2010 and is presently the Chair of the Ethical Review Committee of this institute as well as serving on several boards and committees.
