Tea industry expert Dr M T Ziyad Mohamed has published a tea factory manual in Sinhala.

The author of the manual is the Director, Techno Advisory – Tea, CIC Agribusinesses (Pvt) Ltd and a former director of the Tea Research Institute of Sri Lanka.

The book provides a global tea scenario and an overview of tea industry in Sri Lanka; discusses the stages involved in tea processing technology, quality control and management systems, which include tea tasting and all the certifications applicable for export of tea, machinery maintenance, energy management aspects, bought leaf operations and reasonable price formula, health benefits of tea and institutional structure, which includes organizations involved with the tea sector

Dr Mohamed says tea is considered as a natural drink, as it is produced without any additives, using tender leaf harvested from the tea bush. Furthermore, tea processing is considered as an art, where no complicated machinery is used and hence all the unit operations involved could be easily understood, provided someone makes an effort.

He believes that the contents of this manual will assist the local factories, to improve product quality and thereby increase price; improve efficiency of operations and thereby reduce costs as well as eliminate waste and enforce compliance with statutory and international standards. It has been published by CIC Agribusinesses.
