Sri Lanka’s new vehicles will get registration numbers with three English letters soon following the end of the two-English-letter registry, Motor Traffic Department sources said. The department would be issuing these registration numbers to around 6.4 million vehicles in the next 20 years, the department sources revealed.

The English number vehicle registry was introduced in August 2000 and the number issuing process will be carried out on a long term basis as it has three letters and as such the identification of the numbers would be easy, a top official said.

The new registration numbers were first given to trishaws and will now be introduced to other types of vehicles.

The official said that the department had replaced the first vehicle registrations the Sri series, with the two English-letter which is being transformed to the three-letter series.
