Cardinal Ranjith raises concern over plight of Negombo fishermen

The Negombo fishing community has requested Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith to intervene to save their livelihood in the face of wanton destruction of mangroves and unchecked land filling in the lagoon area.

The fishermen had complained that these acts had drastically reduced the number of fish in the lagoon and the area Catholic priests had taken up the matter with the Bishop’s  Secretatriat in Colombo. At a news conference held to discuss the problem, the Cardinal said development activities in the area had affected the lives of the fishing community that relied on breeding of shrimps, prawns and fish.

“The annihilation of the natural settings of the lagoon will affect the mangroves and every being in the area for it provides them with shelter, food, atmosphere and money,” he said. Rev. Pradeep Chandima of Basthiyawatta Church in Negombo  said there was no accurate survey done to conserve the lagoon even though NARA had demarcated its borders in 2005.
