Green initiatives by Brandix in its 38 local factories resulted in a 30.4% reduction in its carbon footprint even as revenue increased by 40%, the company said on Tuesday. The company had targeted towards a 30% reduction in 2012 of its carbon footprint but had already achieved this six months ahead of schedule in addition to the reduction of water consumption to 35 litres, it was announced at a media briefing in Colombo.

In this respect the company has also established its own Eco Index that would be launched on January 1, 2013 following which they would aspire to achieve targets of rising on its scale, Brandix Chemical and Water Resources Engineer Punsala Ranasinghe said. This would calculate the carbon footprint in terms of boilers, electricity and compressed air consumed. The main theme of the company now is to reduce the use of its resources that was taken up as a first step in this new initiative that was introduced to its local factories.

However, its overseas factories in Bangladesh and India have already commenced initiatives of their own, it was stated.
The company aims at improving its current standing by 20% by 2020, Brandix Director A.J. Johnpillai said.
He noted that the group’s Earth Pledge of achieving zero solid waste to landfill by the end of 2012 has been 75% fulfilled and would be met by the end of the year.

In this respect, the company recycled 430,000 kgs of paper this year, exported nearly 2.5 million kgs of cut fabric waste, and in 2011 supplied the handicrafts and cleaning industries with 164,000 kgs of shredded defected garments, which would normally b incinerated.
Brandix commenced these initiatives by investing US$3 million in energy efficiency improvements in 2011, saving 28,000 GJ of energy and nearly US$800,000 through its energy management plan.

Switching to renewable energy sources such as bio-mass resulted in the replacement of 115, 000 litres of fossil fuel last year.
The company also issued its first Sustainability Report titled “Wear the Future” covering environment, economic and social performance of the group from April 2011 to March 2012. The report states that its Environmental Sustainability is brought about through Resource Efficiency and by investing in eco-friendly technology. It notes that its sustainable business growth is brought about by adhering to relevant compliance requirements, obtaining competitive advantage by aligning the group with customer needs, and through value addition to its products.

Brandix also states that its sustainability in the people and community is achieved through training and awareness, benefits and rewards and recognition for the Brandix workforce and community projects for the community.
