Jayatilleke de Silva to launch book

A book titled ‘Globalization and its Challenges’ written by senior journalist and former Editor of the Daily News and Sunday Observer, Jayatilleke de Silva will be launched at the Sri Lanka Library Services Board auditorium, Colombo 7, on August 28 at 4 p.m.

Human Resources Senior Minister D.E.W. Gunasekera will be the Chief Guest while the Program Director – Public Policy of the Postgraduate Institute of Management, Sri Jayewardenepura University, Dr. Lloyd Fernando will deliver a lecture on ‘Globalization and development’.

Lanka Mahila Samiti Central Board

The 82nd annual general meeting of the Lanka Mahila Samiti was held at the Malabe Training Centre recently.
The following members were elected to the Central Board: Thilaka Perera, Prema Ilapperuma, Mangalika Dahanayaka, Dr. Thelma Gunawardene, Benita De Mel, Lilamani Goonawardene, Vinitha Wickramasingha, Vinodini Jayasiri and Monika Fernando.

Mrs. Thilaka Perera was re-elected President; Mrs. Prema Ilapperuma, Vice President, Mrs Benita De Mel, General Secretary and Mrs. Lilamani Goonawardene, Treasurer. Mrs. Anoja Fernando remains Life President.

AGM of Sri Lanka-Thailand Society

The 15th annual general meeting of the Sri Lanka-Thailand Society will be held on September 14 at 5 p.m. at the Sasakawa Memorial Cultural Centre, 22nd lane, Colombo 3, under the patronage of Thai Ambassador Poldej Worachat. Mrs. Niramlie Gunathilleke will preside.

Anointing of the Sick at Tewatte Basilica

The 68th Annual Anointing of the Sick Service, with the theme ‘Mary Mother of God, strengthen us with the Divine Word’ will be held at the Basilica at Tewatte today.

Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith will be the chief celebrant while Apostolic Nuncio Dr. Joseph Spiteri, Bishop Emeritus Oswad Gomis, Bishop Emeritus Nicholas Marcus and Auxiliary Bishop Maxell Silva will also participate.

‘Balloth ekka be’ back after Australian tour

‘Balloth ekka be,’ the popular drama written and directed by Ravindra Ariyarathne will stage its first show after the Australian tour on September 2 at 3.30 p.m. and 6.45 p.m. at the Namel Malini Punchi Theatre Borella.

The drama is prouduced by Asle J. Lanka Computer Training Institute with the main organizer being Jude Srimal.

Alumni Association Pera Uni stages ‘Debiddo’

The Colombo Chapter of the Alumni Association of the University of Peradeniya will stage ‘Debiddo’, a  comedy directed by Prasanna Vithanage on September 2 at the New Town Hall, Green Path, Colombo 7 at 6.30 p.m. Jayalath Manoratne, Jayani Senanayake and Jayasri Chandrajith will play the lead roles of this comedy originally written by Nobel Laureate Dario Fo. Tickets are available at the Sadeepa Bookshop Borella; Sarasavi Bookshop, Nugegoda and can be purchased at the gate on the day of the play.

Shramadana by old boys of St. Peter’s College

It was shramadana time at St. Peter’s College, Colombo 4, when a group of old boys lent a helping hand not only to clean-up the school premises but also the adjoining canal area in view of the intermittent showers and the threat of dengue which come in their wake.

Menopause Society sessions

The International Annual Scientific Sessions of the Menopause Society of Sri Lanka, in association with the South Asian Federation of Menopause Societies, were held recently at the Galadari Hotel in Colombo.

The Chief Guest was World Health Organization Country Representative Dr. Firdosi Rustom Mehta and Guest of Honour, Past President of the British Menopause Society, Prof. Mary Ann Lumsden. The Menopause Oration ‘Oestrogen from Womb to Tomb’ was delivered by the Editor of the South Asian Federation of Menopause Societies, Dr. Jaideep Malhotra.

CENWOR  holds 13th  National Convention on Women’s Studies 

The ‘Thirteenth National Convention on Women’s Studies’ was held by the Centre for Women’s Research (CENWOR) at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute auditorium recently. The keynote address was delivered by the International Labour Organisation’s Acting Regional Director, Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (ROAP), Thetis Mangahas.
