In the previous edition of ‘Save Green’ the discussion was focussed around how you, as one individual amongst the masses, could help in the mission to save the environment. Since most students are on holiday during this time, it seemed appropriate to include some ideas or starting points on how you can ‘go green’ and be Mother Nature’s helper.

Recycling – this is one of the easiest ways that you can minimise the amount of garbage disposed in the streets and in landfill sites. Items such as glass, plastic and paper is accepted by many agents who ensure that the items are recycled and reused. Remember that plastic takes thousands of years to degrade, so preventing the addition of even a small amount of plastic improves the situation.

Always be aware – Many of us purchase and use excessive plastics. Make sure you carry a reusable bag the next time your family goes marketing. Many shops offer incentives to customers who carry reusable bags. Most purchases are carried home in plastic bags, after which they are discarded. A reusable bag will hence prevent a significant amount of plastics from ending up in landfills.

Box it – when you pack meals to take away with you try to do so in a reusable plastic box, rather than using plastic wrappers or bags.
Do not litter – everyone loves to enjoy the beauty of parks and scenic natural surroundings, but all too often these areas are littered with plastic wrappers, papers, water bottles – which are often the tokens of appreciation that visitors leave behind. By disposing litter in assigned garbage bins, the area is kept in clean and also prevents the spread of diseases such as dengue etc. Most animals mistake plastics for food, if these plastics wind up in wildlife habitats it becomes a serious threat to them.

Choose wisely – you always have a choice to use reusable items. Opt to use refillable water bottles instead of purchasing and discarding plastic bottles. When you are printing or photocopying documents try to get them on double sides, so that you halve the amount of paper used. Single sided paper which is discarded can be used for rough work or to print notices, hand outs etc.

Get Creative – Many offices shred unwanted papers, you can still put them to good use in craft projects to use as decorations.
Start with your home – as the saying goes charity begins at home. So this would be an ideal and safe environment where you could introduce ‘green’ ideas, and also convince your family members and friends to help you out. Who knows? You might even make this a new hobby that you can share with your friends.
