President Mahinda Rajapaksa chided the Opposition for not playing its role and for its reluctance to face elections.
Addressing the UPFA’s inaugural provincial election rally in Anuradhapura, President Rajapaksa said that when he and his Party colleagues were in the Opposition they called for elections, while the current Opposition was seeking to stop elections through court action, he said.

The election would be a good opportunity for the people to show their gratitude to the government, despite the drought and other hardships, said President Rajapaksa, adding that the Government had ended a 27-year conflict and was pushing ahead with development work and providing jobs for university graduates.

“We have carpeted roads as never before in the country’s history,” the President said. “A journey to Colombo that once took six hours now takes only two-and-a-half hours. The country’s irrigation tanks have been reconstructed. We put aside Rs 7,000 million to repair 75 tanks.”

A drinking water project will be launched in the Anuradhapura area, where many kidney patients have been identified, he said.
President Rajapaksa called on the public to trust in the UPFA, and promised that within two years the entire country would have electricity. Already 90 per cent of the country had electricity, he said.
