JHU pulls out of PC polls

View(s):

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) has decided to opt out of the upcoming provincial council elections on the grounds that it was not the time for elections when people were undergoing economic difficulties and hit by drought.
JHU spokesman Nishantha Warnasinghe said the party’s position had been conveyed to the UPFA General Secretary Susil Premajayantha by Minister Champika Ranawaka.

“In view of the crop damages caused by the drought and other economic problems it is difficult to expect the people to come forward to face an election. At least two of the provinces have been affected by the drought,” he said. Mr. Warnasinghe said the JHU politburo had met on Thursday and decided not to contest the North Central, Sabaragamuwa and Eastern Provincial Council elections in September.
