One of the much awaited felicitation ceremonies to recognise talents in television and cinema, SIGNIS (OCIC-UNDA) Salutation will be held on September 1 at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall.  Held for the 36th time, the head of the Sri Lankan Catholic church, Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith will be the chief guest at the festival in which many novel areas of television and cinema are recognized.

Last year, the Salutation introduced new awards for those who exhibited special talent in the cinema and TV with recognitions for Short Film, Electronic Media, Song Visualization, TV Commercials, Credit Films, Trailers and Introductory Electronic Announcements.

Having started on December 21, 1972, with no awards but only just recognitions the Salutation has come a long way despite many odds and financial constraints.

At every festival it is customary that we have the keynote Address based on the current situation in the Local Cinema. In addition to all this we have added on a certain number of items to the programme to give deep meaning and also validity to this festival.

“With the aim to build up a cinema culture and encourage those who are involved in the field of communications, the awards presented to various categories of film making at SIGNIS Salutation were not introduced as “Best Awards” but they were called “Creative Contributions”, said Rev. Fr. Benedict Joseph, National Director of SIGNIS (World Catholic Organisation for Communication) Sri Lanka.

The best Film Critic, is being given the ‘Jayawilal Wilegoda Memorial’ award while the one who stands out in the field of cinema literature is being given the ‘Cyril B. Perera Memorial’ award.

“It should be noted here that having a festival of this type is quite an arduous task. Today specially, finding funds have become difficult but we as an organization have pursued and met with lot of success,” Fr. Joseph said.

SIGNIS Salutation 2012 is sponsored by the Daya Group of Companies 362, Colombo Road, Papiliyana, Boralesgamuwa.
