Dressing up with the Dress Shop

Melissa De Silva (24) has always wanted to do something with clothes but with the many clothes stores around town she always wondered what would make her a cut above the rest… Dresses. A store exclusively for dresses! And this was how Dress Shop was born and so was the label ‘Kayla.’

Dress Shop has been active on line for just a few days but the Facebook Page has been around for around 3 weeks now. The idea of checking out what you can buy over Facebook seems to be catching on with the page having over a 1100 friends.

So why on line?Apart from of course it being something new, “Well, simply because it is convenient for the customer. They can sit in the comfort of their living room and check out what we have to offer,” she says, adding, “It is way more economical than getting to a store.” She is however looking at opening a store in Nedimala which will be up and running in a month.

“My mum was in the clothing industry so it is something I have always had within me,” Melissa says, in response to where she gets her inspiration from, adding “This is something I have always wanted to do and I seem to be fulfilling my dream and all the dresses are designed by me.” Melissa is also open to the idea of a customer giving her a design to stitch and also does alterations. She feels this is a good way of creating a personal touch to the store.

Their pricing is very competitive and there seems to be something quite unique about her dresses. She has a range of evening, casual and even office wear on offer therefore catering to anyone’s fancy. “I am looking at expanding the line to tops and skirts etc. but for now my focus is on dresses,” Melissa says, adding, “The styles change and one style is not available for a long period.” And the designs, where do they come from? “I look around for ideas for the label but most often they are designs that I just come up with,” says Melissa.

What really stands out is the fact that she can arrange for the clothes to be delivered to your doorstep. It is not mandatory to buy the clothes that are brought to you but you need to cover the delivery charges and cash must be paid on delivery. Even when it comes to the clothes you give Melissa to design, she will make sure the final product is delivered to you.

So check out the Dress Shop Facebook page or go on to their website, www.dress-shop.lk for further details.
