MPs ask where KP’s ships and gold are

By Chandani Kirinde

A motion by some UNP MPs for the appointment of a Select Committee to look into the circumstances under which the LTTE’s former international arms procurer Kumaran Pathmanathan alias K.P is being held, has been included in the addendum to the Order Book of Parliament.

The motion signed by eight UNP MPs has been listed under those for which no dates have been fixed.
The motions calls on Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa to appoint a Select Committee to inquire into and report on several matters including the legal provisions under which KP is being held in custody, whether charges will be framed against him and if so under which laws.

The MPs also want the committee to find out whether requests have been made for his extradition and if so by which countries, the fate and location of LTTE assets which were in the possession of KP with particular reference to gold and ships.

They also want the committee to find out whether any officials are guilty of treacherous conduct and neglect of duty in holding KP without prosecuting him under the laws of the country. The motion has been signed by MPs Ravi Karunanayake, Palitha Range Bandara, Lakshman Kiriella, Jayalath Jayawardena, R. Yogarajan, Palitha Thewarapperuma, Niroshan Perera, Abdul Haleem and Eran Wickramaratne,

The motion says KP has been in government custody for more than a year and is on the Interpol’s most wanted list for various charges including arms smuggling and criminal conspiracy.

He is also wanted by India’s law enforcement agencies in connection with the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991 and for violation of the Terrorist Act and the Indian Explosives Act.
