Stalemate over varsity teachers salary demands

By Mirudhula Thambiah

The impasse over the salary demand of university teachers continued with the Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) continuing its demands and the government standing fast.. FUTA Spokesman Dr. Mahim Mendis told the Sunday Times that many of the universities were affected by the resignation of the lecturers from the voluntary positions they had been holding.

“There cannot be any alternative arrangements to cover the work of the heads of departments and there isn’t any way to do so legally,” he said. The resignations of the heads of departments of the universities will definitely affect the entire university system since decision-making has come to a standstill but lectures are being held as the lecturers are not on strike, he said.

Meanwhile the Higher Education Ministry Secretary Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne told the Sunday Times that there has been no impact on the universities caused by th resignations except that a few universities have cancelled lectures.

“Though the heads of departments have resigned, they are not cancelling lectures, therefore there is not much disruption,” Dr. Nawaratne said.

A discussion on the issue was held with the President on May 11, where the vice chancellors, the minister, ministry officials, the President’s Secretary and other relevant officers participated.
