The 10th Triennial Asia Pacific Regional Conference of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) was held from the July 3 - 9 , 2010 in Maldives.

The Asia Pacific Regional Conference was the third in a series of five Regional Conferences taking place across the globe this year, one in each of the WAGGGS five Regions (Western Hemisphere, Asia Pacific, Europe, Africa and Arab).

These high profile conferences are an opportunity for hundreds of Girl Guide/Girl Scout leaders and girls and young women to come together to share experiences, make important decisions regarding governance and the development of the Guiding Movement in the Region.

WAGGGS’ regional conferences fall at a very special time, as girls and young women across the globe celebrate 100 years of international Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting. In keeping with the Centenary theme, the theme of the conference was ‘Plant, Grow, Share’. The First Lady and Chief Guide of the Maldives, Madam Laila Ali, oversaw a ceremony to plant 100 trees on a reclaimed island – an event that was attended by around 300 people including local Girl Guides and Friends of Asia Pacific, WAGGGS (FAPW).

The highlight of the Triennial Conference was the appointment of the new Chairman and Members of the Asia Pacific Regional Committee. Loh Lih Jeng of Singapore was appointed as the 11th Chairman of the 6-member Asia Pacific Regional Committee. Her committee included Ruchira Jayasinghe of Sri Lanka.
On her way back to Singapore, the Chairman Loh Lih Jeng visited Sri Lanka. She was accompanied by her mother Madame Chan who is a member of the FAPW and who also held the chairmanship of the Asia Pacific Regional Committee after Mrs. Sita Rajasuriya who was the Asia Pacific Regional Committee’s Founder Chairman. Loh Lih Jeng will be back in Sri Lanka in March 2011 for the Asia Pacific Regional Committee meeting which will be hosted by the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association.

18 districts go camping!

The annual district camps for Girl Guides, organized by the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association (SLGGA), were held recently from August 7 - 11, 2010. In total, camps were held in 18 districts islandwide.

The district camps provided campers with the opportunity to interact with their sister Guides in an environment of fun and friendship. In addition, themes for three of the camp days had been given to each of the camps, namely 'Adventure', 'International Cookery', and 'Service in the Community', with the idea of providing the Girl Guides with a challenge, while developing their leadership and life skills, and encouraging them to contribute to the benefit of society.

In Colombo, the district camp was held at Vidura College, Thalawathugoda. Eighty-five Girl Guides took part enthusiastically in the camp programme planned out for them. The 'fun day' was followed by a hike to the Parliament where the Girl Guides undertook a complete clean-up of the Parliament grounds and distributed leaflets made by them on the dangers of dengue and preventive measures to be taken, to the general public.

The highest number of reported dengue cases and deaths in Sri Lanka, amounting to 4,262 and 45 respectively, are from the Colombo District.

The camp fire which was held on the evening of August 10, 2010 was attended by Mrs. Swarnika Pitigala, Assistant Director of Education, Ministry of Education, Directors and Members of the SLGGA,
parents and well-wishers.
