A different kind of quest

By Megara Tegal

A wicked witch, her captive and the rescuers- all the ingredients needed for an enthralling fairy tale play. Titled ‘The Quest for Friendship’, the play is of an original script written by Krishan and Sanjeev Jayaratnam. The story is about how 6 friends set out to rescue another in their group who has been kidnapped by the evil witch, Queen Psycholia.

The cast comprises of more than 50 students aged between 4 to 15, who will delight the audience with their talent in song and acting. “The play is a combination of fairytales”, explains Sanjeeva, “to give people a clearer picture, it’s similar to Shrek”. He elaborates that the similarity is only that the plot has a mix of different fairytales storylines. “It’s a good play for parents to take their kids to so they can spend more time with them,” he adds.

The production team is made of well known names in the industry such as Sanjeeva (Script writer, music composer and music director) and Krishan (Director and script writer), Ishan de Lanerolle (producer and music director), Paulmarie Mendis (music track orchestrator and executer), Indu Dharmasena (choreographer and lighting) and Sanwada Dharmasena (choreography). Others also include Thelma Jayaratnam (stage set designer and executer) and Krishani Nanayakara (costume designer) who happens to be one of the students at the academy.

The play is a production of the Revelations Academy of Performing Arts and Creativity. The academy was founded by Sanjeev who is the choral conductor of the group ‘Revelations’ which is presently ranked 4th in the world among the top 50 male choirs.
