By Susitha R. Fernando

For the first time in the Sri Lankan cinema history Chandran Rutnam’s ‘Alimankada’ (Road from Elephant Pass) is to be dubbed into five Indian languages and screened in India.

Ashan and Suranga

The film based on Nihal de Silva’s Gratiaen prize winning novel under the same title will be dubbed into the following languages- Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. With the local languages ‘Alimankada’ is scheduled to be run around India as a commercial release.

“We have signed agreements with our Indian collaborators,” said Rutnam, the producer and director of the film said. ‘This is a historical and unprecedented event in the Sinhala cinema industry and we have paved the way for our future generation to carry on the industry,” he added.

Woven around an army officer and a female informant of LTTE and their journey from conflict to companionship, the roles are ably played by Ashan Dias and Suranga Ranawaka in their debut roles.
Others in the case include Sanath Gunatilleke, Veena Jayakody, Irangani Serasinghe, Joe Abeywickrema and Athula Pathirana.

The film is now successfully being screened at the Regal Colombo and other CEL circuit cinemas around the country.
