In celebrating their Golden Jubilee, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka (ICASL) hosted a fellowship dinner on July 22 2009 at Earl's Regency Hotel, Kandy. The occasion was attended by eminent personalities in the region including the Central Province Chief Minister - Hon. Sarath Ekanayake, Mayor, Kandy Municipal Council, L.B. Aluvihare and over 200 distinguished guests.

ICASL is the first incorporated professional Accounting body in Sri Lanka. Although during the formative years ICASL mainly focused on aspects such as studies, training and examinations, over the years it has progressively broadened its sphere of activities. Today the sole responsibility of formulation of Sri Lanka's Accounting and Auditing Standards rests on ICASL. In the recent past ICASL enacted a code of Corporate Governance in collaboration with the Colombo Stock Exchange which now forms part of the CSE listing rules. The institute holds annually, the Best Corporate Report Competition, which has substantially strengthened the Standards of Financial Reporting in Sri Lanka.

In delivering the welcome address Mr. Sujeewa Rajapakse Council member stressed the significance of having a Fellowship dinner in Kandy. He stated that the largest concentration of Chartered Accountants outside the Western Province is found in the Central Province, and a considerable number of audit firms have their branches in Kandy. The number of students who select Accountancy as a career path is also high in the Central Province.

Mr. Lal Nanayakkara, the Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Celebration Committee of ICASL spoke of the wide range professional services offered by ICASL. "At a time, the role of the Accountant is called into question globally, ICASL is mindful of its obligations in the public interest. This Fellowship dinner is a good opportunity to promote a dialogue with our stakeholders.

Mr. Asite Talwatte, Past President and Senior Partner of Ernst & Young Chartered Accountants spoke of the need to develop a closer understanding between the respective roles of the institutes, other professionals, business community and the academic. The global financial crisis has thrown up new challenges and it is through such understanding that effective solutions could be found to counter such challenges. Mr. Aruna Alwis, CEO of ICASL explained the reasons for the decision of the council to have regional fellowships and conduct the inaugural Fellowship dinner in Kandy.

The guests who attended the Fellowship dinner exchanged ideas of mutual interest and ICASL values these ideas and will take them into consideration in the future strategy of the Institute.
