"YOUR PLANET NEEDS YOU – UNITE TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE" was the theme for "World Environmental Day" on June 5, 2009. A special programme designed to highlight this theme as well as
emphasize the involvement of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) in global issues was organized by the 5th Colombo Guide Company.

The first half of the programme highlighted WAGGGS' involvement with the United Nations (UN), in particular WAGGGS' support of the 8 Millenium Development Goals (MDGs), with emphasis on the 7th MDG "Ensure environmental sustainability" and WAGGGS' corresponding Global Action Theme (GAT) message, girls worldwide say, "we can save our planet".

The latter part of the programme was centered around games designed to highlight the impact each human being has on the environment and demonstrate how each individual can take responsibility for the world we live in. One of the guides had a simple but significant message to share. "We would be pleased if our fellow Guides and friends in and around our beautiful island of Sri Lanka would help us to make this world a better place for future generations. Remember that a small action can make a big difference."
