Lankans just three games away from glory

Sri Lanka is just three matches away from a coveted place in Group II of The Asia/Oceania Davis Cup Tournament.

The Lankan team led by Aasiri Iddamalgoda the non-playing Captain and comprising of Harshana Godamanne, Rajiv Rajapakse, Sanka Athukorale and Guyanga Weeasekera won all their three ties in the round-robin stage staged in Syria.

The round-robin stage comprised of two groups of four teams. Sri Lanka was drawn in Group B along with hosts Syria, Iran and Saudi Arabia.

In the first tie The Lankans did well to beat Iran by two matches to one. Harshana Godamanne dispatched R. Kamran in straight sets 6-3, 6-2 and he along with Rajiv Rajapakse easily defeated the Iranian pairing of A. Shahgholi and A. Shokoofi 6-0, 6-2 in the doubles.

The Lankans followed their triumph over Iran with two three nil white wash victories over Saudi Arabia and the hosts.Sri Lanka will now meet Lebanon for a place in Division 11.
