Sri Lanka needs new economic system – A.T. Ariyaratne

"If there is a will, then there is a way. We must think futuristically. Sarvodaya has survived for 50 years and I am thinking of the 50 years that is beyond us. The time has come to change the present economic system, which is wicked and evil and replace it with a new economic system," leader of the Sarvodaya Movement, Dr.A.T.Ariyaratne has said.

He was speaking at an awards ceremony organized by the Enterprise Services Division of Sarvodaya Economic Enterprise Development Services (SEEDS) on April 7 which was held to reward the "Best Woman Entrepreneur of 2008", chosen from among thousands of Sarvodaya societies spread throughout the country.

The event held for the 4th consecutive year at SEEDS head office auditorium at Moratuwa was sponsored by the World University Service of Canada (WUSC) and Uniterra. Dr. Ariyaratne said that through Sarvodaya and its network of societies, the movement has been able to introduce and popularize many new ideas and concepts throughout the country, especially among the rural masses.

The importance of the Sarvodaya society network and its membership will be evident in the future. SEEDS, the economic arm of Sarvodaya, has rendered valuable service to develop the network of societies economically and to uplift the entrepreneurial skills of the Sarvodaya membership. "You are here as a result of the work that has been achieved through these societies", he told the award winners gathered at the ceremony.

From the national standings, Ms. U.H. Shameera Bashini from the Matara district was judged the "Best Woman Entrepreneur of 2008." Ms. G. P. Dushanthi Chandrakanthi and Ms. Buddika Shamali Abeydheera -both from Matale district -were placed second and third respectively. From the district-wise standings, 20 entrepreneurs were selected from each district and rewarded for their performance.
