Show us what your religion has taught you

By Kingsley Durairaj, Etul Kotte

Gone are the days when we followed our religions, which taught us to “love thy enemy” and “do good, not evil”.

We once had a disciplined, civilised society. Now we have a society that thinks nothing of committing murder, torture and rape. We are experts at betrayal, kidnapping, maiming, acid-throwing and other acts of barbarism.
The place where Varsha’s body was found in Trincomalee

Don’t the teachings of our religions mean anything to us any more? The problem is universal, not confined to our country, or to Asia. Look at the appalling case of the Austrian man who imprisoned his daughter in a cellar for 24 years and fathered seven children by her.

Here in Sri Lanka we were shocked by the kidnapping and brutal murder of a six-year-old child. Varsha Jude was tied up, tortured and strangled. Not only Varsha’s parents but all parents are weeping for this child.

The death sentence should be re-introduced in this country to rid society of its evil elements, so the rest of us can live peacefully, free of fear from uncivilised brutes. Lawmakers – rise and act. Stop the escalation of crime in this country.

Academics – rise and act. Start moulding a decent society. Clerics – rise and act. Show your people how to live according to your religious teachings. Politicians – rise and act. Set us an example, teach us to be peace-loving citizens.

Senior citizens – rise and act. Show us how society should behave. The affluent – rise and act. Assure us that you don’t make money at other people’s expense. Citizens – rise and act. When will you bring all this madness to an end?
