Young filmmaker with internationally acclaimed directions, Anuruddha Jayasinghe started his third film ‘Bomba saha Rosa’ (Bombs and Roses), a story which is a reflection of present day Sri Lankan social atmosphere where the life goes on with bombs and their disastrous repercussions.
Having directed ‘Sankranthi’ and ‘Dawal Doowili’ which won acclaim at prestigious international film festivals, Anuruddha’s latest direction is to be shown to both the local and international audience. Anuruddha’s first film ‘Sankranthi’ (The Tender Trap) was selected to be screened at the 34th International Indian Film Festival while his second direction ‘Dawala Doowili’ was nominated to the final ten films at the 37th International Indian Film Festival.
‘Bombs and Roses’ -revolves round a bomb-laden motorbike which comes to the city targeting a VIP. The intelligence units come to know about the terrorist’s plan and the city is alerted and search operations are carried out.
The bomber who rides the bike parks it in order to prevent his being checked by the police during which time the bike is stolen by a well-known robber who even has connections with the police. The robbed, bomb-laden bike is being ridden throughout the city even passing the police and checkpoints.
It becomes a part and parcel of the ordinary life and the deadly vehicle is being hired by lovers and used for day-to-day purposes and even for shooting of a musical video. Unaware of the danger of the motorbike full of explosives, people live with it until a dramatic event occurs.
Despite the suspense, the story runs in a lighter vein.
“While bombs reflect the dangerous atmosphere we are living in, roses represent the ordinary life and love that is part of the day’s happening,” describing the title Anuruddha said.
The films stars a talented cast including Mahendra Perera, Bimal Jayakody, Jayani Senanayake, Suminda Sirisena, Giriraj Kaushalya, Dharmapriya Dias, Upeksha Swarnamali, Vishva Kodikara, Rozanne Diasz, Sarath Kothalawela, Kumara Thirimadura, Pramudi Karunaratne, Udayanthi Kulathunga, Boodee Keerthisena and Sampath Jayaweera.
“We live in a society filled with terror and danger and most of the time instead of the targeted influential and powerful, the ordinary people, despite racial difference become victim of the bombs. Our lives are always in a risk not knowing what would happen the next moment,” Anuruddha described the backdrop to his film.
“Yet I wanted to capture this situation through the cinema which is the medium of entertainment,” the young director added.
Anuruddha was grateful to Eric Kusum Makewitage, a Sri Lankan domiciled in Switzerland who helped him to get over the first hurdle of finding a producer and also for Lucky Imran who played the role of a co producer. Able crew hired for the film it includes Channa Deshapriya as cinematographer, Ranesh Nanayakkara as editor, Jagath Imbulpe as art director, Priyantha Sirikumara as make-up artiste and young Ranga Dassanayake as music director. Ajantha Ranasinghe and Sudath Silva are coordinators for the production. |
