From flowing robes to youthful funk

By Nedra Wickremesinghe

What an event it turned out to be last Friday! First, local journalists were relegated to the back, while the international media were given prime seats -and then the shooting happened!

Friday’s show at the HSBC Colombo Fashion Week kicked off with the Yoland Aluwihare-Holm Collection - and one can only be amazed that her creativity gets better from year-to-year. Her signature style of loose and flowing designs, reminiscent of ancient Greek and Roman period styles were absolutely striking. Much thought was given to texture of textile and design, and the stunning drapes on the models displayed her modern and contemporary outlook to life and fashion.

In total contrast was the youngest designer Sarani Gunawickrama who boldly displayed her youthful creations of pop-art, fantasy and imagination to showcase the Mad Tea Party from her Alice in Wonderland collection. She clearly displayed her originality and hopefully her bold strides may make headlines in the fashion business of Sri Lanka in the future. Bangalore based Tahera Peeran' s evening collection of cocktail wear was sensous and sexy. Her use of silk, satin and chiffons, cut on- the- bias and the rich and vibrant colours added much allure to her collection.

Fahad Sheriff's "Middle Finger" line was a sure-fire winner. Famed for his slim-cut shirts, this time his collection for women was trendy, wearable and hip, with short pleated skirts with knee-high stockings in harlequin designs.

The much-awaited finale by Bibi Russell and Shobe De however, had to be called off as the show came to a halt with the black-out.
