Inner Wheel celebrates 40 years of service to others

The Inner Wheel Club of Kandy District 322 Sri Lanka, the third oldest club in Sri Lanka celebrated its 40th anniversary this month. The club was formed in the 1920's when the wives of Rotarians branded together to help them with their projects. Pledging to serve fellow human beings regardless of their cultures and creed, this dedicated club has done a notable amount of charitywork.

The club has regularly provided financial support to the Sri Lanka Cancer Society- Kandy Branch, Lewella Boys’ Home for differently abled children, Singithi Sevena Children's Home, Daya Niwasa for the destitute, and Mahaiyawa Elders’ Home. Members also distribute yoghurt monthly to outpatients at the cancer ward of the Kandy General Hospital and the ward at the Dental Hospital, Peradeniya.

The thoracic ward, the Intensive Care Unit of the Cardiology Department, cancer ward of the General Hospital, Kandy, Dental Hospital, Peradeniya and the Paraplegic Hospital, Digana, have all benefited through the efforts of the club's members in caring for the sick. Arrangements are also being made to donate a haemo- cue machine to the Paediatric ward of the General Hospital, Kandy and sponsor the travelling expenses of children who come from distant areas to attend the Cancer Clinic at the Kandy General Hospital.

In keeping with the IIW theme for 2008/ 09, "Realise your vision and make a difference", the club headed by President Zipporah Rajan has many projects to care for the less privileged in society.
