Cricketers at the top just a myth - Letters to the Sports Editor

Being a very keen Cricket fan for over three decades I have watched with dismay the recent developments in and out of the Cricket Field and have come to one conclusion-Playing Cricket at the highest level-test level, does not necessarily mean that they can be good administrators, umpires or selectors. Or else how can you explain the manner in which Arjuna Ranatunge (Chairman -Interim Committee), Kumara Dharmasena (International Umpire) and Ashantha de Mel (Chairman –Selection Committee) carried out their respective tasks.Take the case of Arjuna. The entire Country and even the World is aware how he administered Sri Lanka Cricket during his tenure. Apparently there is nothing left now at SLC to be messed up. So much so that even this current tour of India would not have been possible if Arjuna remained at SLC.

It was only a matter of time before Kumar Dharmasena the International Umpire was exposed. No doubt you were good fighting allrounder, but when it comes to umpiring you need experience, yes a lot of it, first class and even some international games where non-test playing nations are involved. What happened? In front of may be one billion viewers you became the laughing stock with only your first decision.

So remember Mr. Dharmasena, Umpiring is also a different ball game! When you see the manner in which our players are being chopped and shifted around you tend to think whether the Selectors have played any cricket at the highest level! Or is it better to have people with less cricket sense and more common sense in those positions rather than have test players.

Why bring in players like Dilhara Fernando when he still cannot bowl a six ball over without conceding a no ball or a wide? Do we need Dilshan to open and play a twenty-20 innings in a 50 over game when his partner is Sanath Jayasuriya?

M. Fernando, Kotahena
