WA a great place to live and learn

Western Australia (WA) has firmly established itself as a provider of world class education. The State's five universities share a wealth of research and academic excellence, each with their own area of expertise. Every university offers a dynamic, stimulating learning environment with state-of-the art facilities and access to unrivalled academic resources to enable students to excel professionally and personally. The internationally recognised qualifications gained at a WA university are highly regarded in academic circles as well as the corporate community.

Research plays an integral role of WA universities' success. The State has been producing outstanding research for many years and continues to expand its research partnerships around the globe. A city of just 1.6 million people, Perth has a tradition of 'punching above its weight'. The numerous scientific and technological advancements developed by West Australian individuals and organisations have achieved global recognition and had a positive impact on many lives. For example:

The Lions Eye Institute is the largest eye research institute in the southern hemisphere. Its research teams lead the world in investigating cataract, diabetes, glaucoma, retinal degenerations, artificial cornea & laser and gene therapies. The Gravity Discovery Centre is one of only six centres of its kind in the world. It houses the Zadko Telescope. The primary science goal for the Zadko Telescope collaboration is to understand the link between gamma-ray bursts and massive stellar collapse or supernovae.

Professor Barry Marshall revolutionised the treatment of stomach ulcers around the world when he proved that ulcers are in fact caused by a bacterium called helicobacter pylori, rather than stress and poor diet as was believed for decades. In 2005, Prof Marshall and his research partner, Dr Robin Warren, received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for their life-changing discovery.

Vocational training in Australia is an internationally recognised system of education that is very popular with both local and international students and highly regarded by employers for its practical approach to education. Vocational courses are career-focussed and carefully designed in collaboration with industry to meet the current needs of employers, and are taught by qualified professionals with years of experience. Work placements and real life projects play an integral part in vocational programs.
The WA education system is also well known for its flexible study pathways to higher education programmes. There are both government and non-government providers with established university links offering a variety of courses which, upon successful completion, allow direct entry into undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Pathway colleges have an excellent support network and assist students with their university applications at every step of the way.

Perth offers one of the highest standards of living in the world with the highest income per capita in Australia at an average of AU$65,525 per annum (WA Business News, 22 May 2008). This is further reflected in the high standards of education, health care, transport, accommodation and recreational facilities. The burgeoning WA economy has resulted in the lowest unemployment rate in Australia with a surplus of part time jobs for international students wishing to gain work experience in the Australian economy.

WA proudly host over 42,000 international student enrolments per year in courses ranging from English language tuition and vocational training to undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. WA's top 15 source countries for international students include a diverse range of nationalities from Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas. Studying in Perth provides the unique opportunity to sample the rich tapestry of life in a clean, safe and cosmopolitan environment. In 2004, Perth was voted one of the world's top three "most liveable cities" (The Economist) and was recently voted as one of the world's "top ten future cities" (Lonely Planet, 2006).
