The SLIM Business School (SBS) which is the education arm of the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing, the national body of marketers in Sri Lanka is one of the first institutes to conduct coaching for CIM UK examinations and today sets standards in marketing. The qualification is accepted by a number of universities and educational institutions worldwide for entry into their MBA programmes.

About Preliminary Certificate In Marketing
The Preliminary Certificate in Marketing is a course designed to give a basic introduction into the marketing discipline. It is a course which provides basic theoretical constructs in terms of 40 hour class room sessions over a period of three months. It also carries a practical assignment where students translate their learnings in the class room into real world practical applications.
The course was introduced in 1988 and has been revised many times to meet the constant requirements of the market place. The program was relaunched with improved syllabus content together with the introduction of a standard text book.

Course Objectives
The objective of the program is to provide participants with

  • A basic orientation in marketing encouraging students to proceed for higher studies in marketing.
  • A basic entry qualification and confidence to embark on a career in marketing.
  • An understanding of marketing as an essential management philosophy.

For Whom
nStudents interested to get an idea of what marketing as a subject/discipline is. (After O/L or A/L). This experience will help them to choose their future career moves.
nJunior Marketers who require a basic marketing qualification.
nMiddle level marketing rankers who would like to get some theoretical input about marketing.
nIndividuals of other professions who would like to understand what marketing is about.

Eligibility Criteria
Those who are 16 years and above with a professional aspiration.
The course will require a good working knowledge of English.

Registrations
All students are expected to register for the program with the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing. (SLIM) In addition to this they will have to register with the respective accredited tuition centres around the country to follow classes.
A text book recommended by the examiners will be given free of charge upon registration.

Evaluation
The students are evaluated through a written practical assignment and with a final examination. In order to pass the examination, a student will have to be successful both at the examination and the assignment.

Assignments are structured to allow students to apply their learning to practical situations making the program unique. Students will get detailed guidelines in handling assignments. For the examination, there will be two papers. Paper one will be a one hour multiple choice examination and while paper two will be a two and half hour written examination.

Award of the certificate
The candidate should pass the examination and should have paid in full all dues to the Institute to be eligible to participate at the certification ceremony and to collect the certificate. The Institute has the right to withdraw/ cancel any certificate if any information provided on the admission forms /certificates are found to be false.

Post Pcm Education
All PCM students who manage to secure an ordinary pass and above will be subjected to a viva to enter the Graduate Diploma in Marketing (Sri Lanka) without sitting for the entrance examination. Also, a student who manages to obtain a Merit Pass (B grade) would be exempted from the Subject "Essentials of Marketing" at the Foundation Level of the Graduate Diploma in Marketing.
