All Island U20 Schools Rugby 7’s
Fancied teams advance to Cup quarter finals

The All Island Inter-schools Division Two U20 rugby 7’s conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Association and sponsored by Singer got underway at the Panadura Esplanade yesterday. This is also the final tournament of the schools 2008 rugby calendar.

Twenty three teams around the island were in action with the teams being divided into eight groups. The quarter finalists in the two categories of the Cup and Plate championships were found after the completion of the round robin games.

Of the eight teams that qualified to the Cup category Royal Panadura had the best record winning both the matches comfortably where they beat Moratuwa MV 26-0 and Nugawela MV 31 which incidentally was the highest score of the day to come out on top in Group ‘B’.

St Anne’s Kurunegala, Christ Church Matale, Maliyadeva, St Thomas Matara, St Thomas Matale, Unawatuna NS and St Sebastian’s Kandana were the other teams to advance to the quarters in the Cup category.

The Plate championship category saw Dharmapala Pannipitiya, Richmond, Siri Piyarathana MMV Padukka, Bandaranaike MMV Gampaha, Hindu College, Asoka MV and Welagedera MV book their berth to the quarter finals.

In the Bowl championship category Talduwa MV, Nugawela MV, Lalith Athulathmudali MMV, Devapathiraja Rathgama, Sri Sumangala Kandy, St Joseph’s MV and Wayamba Royal moved to the quarter finals which were completed that ended in Talduwa MV, Devapathiraja Rathgama, Sri Sumangala and Wayamba Royal advancing to the semi finals.

The quarter finals of the Cup and Plate category will be played from 8.00 a.m. onwards and the semi finals of the three categories is scheduled to be worked off from 12.30 p.m. onwards while the Cup final is due to be played at 3.00 p.m.

The quarter final line up in the Cup category are St Anne’s vs Royal Panadura, Christ Church vs Maliyadeva, St Thomas Matara vs St Thomas Matale and Unawatuna NS vs St Sebastian’s. The chief guest will be K.D.S. Kanishka, Promotions Manager Singer Sri Lanka Ltd.
