12 – 14 years
By M. Nawab Irshad (13+ years), St. Sylvester's College, Kandy

Social Service means various professional activities concerned in providing services to disadvantaged or distressed people or groups. This field was originated in the charity organizations in Europe and US in the late 19th century.

To lead this activity, certain groups or organizations are formed. These organizations serve the needs of children and families, the poor or homeless, immigrants, mentally ill people and victims of violence.

As an example, during the tsunami that took place in 2004, many social workers came to our country from developed countries and provided many essential needs such as food, water and clothing. Even in the world, many countries such as Somalia and Ethiopia are suffering from major droughts and food shortages. Social institutes play a major part in providing relief to these people.

Almost all developed nations now have social service programmes that provide benefits or services through several major approaches such as social insurance and social assistance which are needs-based programmes that pays benefits only to poor people.

So social service is a major need for mankind, and let us be thankful for the social institutes who work for the development of the community as well as the country.

A cultural event I enjoyed

By Chathumini Benaragama (10 years), Visakha Vidyalaya

The most enjoyable experience I have ever had is the day I got together with friends at Mith Sevana to sing Poson Bakthi Gee. Little Friends of 11th Colombo Pack did this programme according to our Sylvana's guidance and support.

We practiced before the final day. On this day all of us dressed in white. All of us brought white lotus for us and our friends as well. Some of us were having lighted candles when singing.

We sang nearly 15 songs relevant to Buddhism, Lord Buddha and Poson Day. It was so surprising to the friends at Mith Sevana singing with us as one group.

It was a nice feeling for me as I know that I have done something worthy to make their world happy. I have contributed in a small way to celebrate Poson Bakthi Gee by making needy people happy.

A happy day

It was the first trip with my school friends. We started our trip from our school. We sang a lot of songs during our trip.

We went to Mihinthale at Anuradhapura. It was a rocky mountain. It was fun to climb the rock, but very scary to go in between. There were a lot of monkeys and deer. We took a bath at Thissa Wewa and had our lunch also at the bank of the lake.

It was very sad to return home. I'm waiting for my next trip with my school friends.
