US Presidential Elections
12 – 14 years
By Wihanga Premaratne (14 years), Mahamaya Girls' College, Kandy

United States is considered a formidable global power by many. By the end of this year, Mr. George W. Bush will have finished his eight years of leadership which leaves a need for a new person to the title.

During the last few months, nominees from the Democratic and Republican parties were selected by the Electoral College system. Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton were battling for the nomination to represent the Democrats, while John McCain gained nomination of the Republican Party without much competition.

The campaigns led by all three candidates were quite satisfactory and the fight between Obama and Clinton went down the wire with Obama emerging victorious. The presidential election will be held in November and many commentators say if Obama wins, he will be a revolution in USA history as he is the youngest and first black person to gain the presidency. On the other hand, McCain would probably go along George W. Bush's steps and continue his work.

So far, Obama leads McCain 51% – 36% in the recent polls and might have a win against him in November. But it is still sparks under coal till the last day of the election.

A wedding I have been to

9 –11 years

By Nelaka Edirisinghe (9 years), S. Thomas' College, Mt. Lavinia

My uncle's wedding was at the Mt. Lavinia Hotel. I was very proud as I was the page boy and wore a full suit. The hall was beautifully decorated. First the bridegroom and close relatives entered the hall. Next the bride and the little maids came. Everyone stood up when the bride came. After the poruwa ceremony, we had cake and drinks.

When the band started playing most of the guests danced. I too joined the baila dancing. After that we had dinner. The bride had changed into another beautiful sari. Now it was time for Mama and Nanda to leave. When they were leaving we threw confetti on them.

I had a very enjoyable time at the wedding. Mama and Nanda I wish you all the best.

My father

8 years and below

By Nethmini Wattetenna, (7 years), St. Anthony's B.M.V., Kandy

My father is Ranjith Wattetenna. He is forty-six years old. He is a captain in the Sri Lanka Army.

These days he serves in Mannar. I like when he comes home. Then my Malli and I play with him. We ask him to take us in his arms. He brings us toys and sweets.

He takes me to school. My father is very kind. He likes to help poor people. We are very sad when his holidays are over.

I am proud of my father because he is a hero. May the Triple Gem bless him!
