Special lanes for buses

A separate lane will be reserved for buses travelling on the Galle Road in a new traffic plan devised by the National Transport Commission.

A trial run begins today at 6am, with routes drawn up along stretches of the Galle Road, Bauddhaloka Mawatha and Duplication Road, with turnings at the Bambalapitiya and Thunmulla junctions. Buses coming from Colombo will turn past Thunmulla junction and take the Bauddhaloka Mawatha route towards Bambalapitiya junction.

Buses coming along Duplication Road will turn right at the junction where Bauddhaloka Mawatha meets Duplication Road and head towards Bambalapitiya junction. Buses heading towards Colombo along the Galle Road will turn right at the Bambalapitiya junction and go along Bauddhaloka Mawatha towards Thunmulla junction.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara said the short stretch between the Bauddhaloka Mawatha-Duplication Road junction and Bambalapitiya junction will be closed to all traffic except for buses. Vehicles other than buses travelling past Thunmulla junction and along Bauddhaloka Mawatha towards the Galle Road will have to turn left, in front of the HSBC office at the Bauddhaloka-Duplication Road junction, go along Duplication Road and turn right into Vajira Road and towards the Galle Road.

The land-side stretch of the Galle Road between the Vajira Road and Bambalapitiya junctions will be reserved for buses only, one lane for buses coming from Colombo, and the other lane for buses taking the Galle Road route to Thunmulla junction.
