JVP to fight for rights of displaced Sampur people

The JVP has decided to take legal action to restore the rights of some 4,000 persons who have been displaced due to the proposed coal power project to be to put up by India in the Sampur area of Trincomalee district.

Member of Parliament Vijitha Herath told The Sunday Times that currently legal consultations were in progress and they would go ahead to file action on behalf of the displaced people who are now living in welfare centres.

“If the residents were evicted from their homes it is the duty of the Government to provide them with alternative shelter. Instead, for over the past one year they have been living in welfare centres,” he said. He said it was a violation of the fundamental rights of the residents.
