Uni-flow on despite protests

By Asif Fuard

Despite objections by many road users who had written to the Colombo City Traffic Police over the uni-flow traffic scheme, the Police Department plans on implementing the one-way traffic system soon, Colombo City Traffic Director SSP Y.G.M.R. Lafir told The Sunday Times.

“We are in the process of studying the one-way traffic scheme. We plan on having more test runs in the Colombo city and then implement it if it is found to be successful,” SSP Lafir said.

“At first, road users will find it a bit confusing and may complain because they are not used to it. But it is the best method of controlling traffic. Many developed countries follow the uni-flow scheme also known as the one way traffic system,” he said.

“By this system buses, cars and small vehicles will stick to different lanes. This will minimise congestion, accidents, fuel wastage and will also help the security,” the Traffic Director said.

However, The Sunday Times learns that the system planned nearly four years ago was being delayed pending approval from higher authorities.

Many businessmen had complained in writing to Police Headquarters about the uni-flow system causing a negative impact on their businesses.

Last month the Colombo City Traffic was unable to perform a test run of the scheme due to the strong public objection.
