Vibin' Power

Two powerful female singing voices will combine their strengths to record a song. Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey who are sometimes unfairly rivalled against each other by their fan camps will record a duet for Steven Spielberg's next movie "The Prince of Egypt". The song will be out as a single around Christmas when the film is expected for release.

Whitney Houston, 35, has had a string of hit singles mainly power ballads like "Saving All My Love", "Greatest Love Of All", "Didn't We Almost Have It All" and "I Will Always Love You" amongst others. Whitney has released duets such as "Hold Me" with Teddy Pendergrass, "It Isn't, It Wasn't, It Ain't Never Gonna Be" with Aretha Franklin, "Something In Common" with husband Bobby Brown and "Count On Me" with CeCe Winans.

Mariah Carey, 28, has also had her share of chart success with songs such as "Vision Of Love", "Love Takes Time", "I'll Be There", "Hero" and "My All". As for duets, she had only recorded and released two, "Endless Love" with Luther Vandross and "One Sweet Day" with Boyz II Men.

When December draws near TV stations and radio stations will be waiting for the Houston-Carey duet while the two singers will be laughing their way to the bank.

Boyzone took over the prime position of the UK singles chart last week with "No Matter What". This week, the Irish group hold on to the prize for a second week. The song unlike previous Boyzone singles is written by Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Jim Steinman. The song is featured in Lord Lloyd Webber's new musical "Whistle Down The Wind". Unlike in previous years Webber has teamed up with Jim Steinman for lyrics and music in order to produce a more rocking atomosphere. Steinman, as you would recall, was behind those melodramatic songs like "Total Eclipse Of The Heart" for Bonnie Tyler, "I'd Do Anything For Love" for Meat Loaf and "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" for Celine Dion.

Cleopatra, the all girl group from Birming- ham are back in the UK chart this week at No. 4 with "I Wan't You Back". The trio cover the old Jackson song almost identically. For the video Cleopatra create a 70's atmosphere moving around on roller skates. "I Want You Back" was the Jacksons' very first chart entry in the UK 28 years ago, on the Tamla Motown label. At the time the song peaked at No. 2. Now Cleo, Zaiman and Yonah re-create "I Want You Back" introducing the song to a new generation altogether. This being Cleopatra's third single and top 20 hit at that from the album 'Comin' Atcha races ahead of the Puff Daddy/Jacksons revision of the same song released to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the founding of Motown Records.

Simply Red also spin a per ennial into the chart this week. Mick Hucknall now almost the sole member of the band dominates vocals on "The Air That I Breathe". The song is currently being used as a TV commercial in the UK.

The old Hollies classic checks into the chart at No. 6 for Simply Red. While Hucknall must be given credit for reviving "The Air That I Breathe," Simply Red's rendition cannot be compared in anyway to the Hollies original. Within the next 3 months Simply Red's rendition will be just another statistic while the Hollies version of "The Air That I Breathe" will linger on.

The Beatles movie "A Hard Day's Night" is to be released next year, it was announced last week in London. The film widely acclaimed as the best rock 'n' roll movie of all time will be touched up to filter through modern technology.

Robbie Williams who is due to release a new al- bum called 'Millennium' next month has ended his two month engagement to All Saints member Nicole Appleton it was revealed last week.

George Michael is back with the Sony label re cording new songs for a compilation album due for release around November. There appears to be some kind of reconciliation two years after Michael fought and lost a lengthy and costly court case in London against Sony. Most of the new songs are likely to be released as singles as they have chart making potential.
