Muhammad rewrites 200m breaststroke national record
M.F. Muhammad of Zahira College produced another record-breaking performance after the 18-year-old breaststroke specialist renewed the national 200m breaststroke record on Day Two of the three-day Selection Trial for the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool Complex in Colombo yesterday.

M.F. Muhammad, a champion in the making
Representing Killer Whale Aquatics (KWA), Muhammad clocked an impressive 2:21.61 to erase his own previous national record of 2:22.41 set last year. The talented swimmer had already grabbed headlines on the opening day of the championship after breaking the national 50m breaststroke record. Muhammad touched the wall in 29.03 seconds to surpass the previous national mark of 29.24 seconds established by Kiran Jasinghe in 2023 in Gold Coast, Australia.
Training under Killer Whale Aquatics, Muhammad also came close to another national record on Day One when he clocked 54.89 seconds in the 100m butterfly event. He narrowly missed the long-standing national record of 54.33 seconds held by his Head Coach at KWA, double Olympian Matthew Abeysinghe, which was set in 2016.
