‘Treasure Crest Villa’: Hilltop escape by the sea
View(s):By Sanath Weerasuriya
Sun-kissed sandy bay, calm blue waters and the lush green backdrop of Rumassala make Unawatuna one of
Sri Lanka’s finest beach destinations. This beautiful bay has earned global recognition as one of the world’s most picturesque beach spots and continues to attract both local and international travellers seeking relaxation, sunshine and scenic coastal charm.
Most of the travellers are spread around the Bay and some choose to stay further inland to enjoy the greenery and peaceful nature, apart from sand and the sea. Yet many still begin their day by heading to the beach to enjoy the waves and sand, even if they are staying a few kilometres away from the shore.

Perched just a few minutes from the Unawatuna Bay, ‘Treasure Crest Villa’ in Thalpe Kanda is a charming retreat for beach and nature lovers. Uniquely positioned atop Talpe Hill, just a kilometre inland from the Galle Road, this 130-year-old bungalow once belonged to a wealthy cinnamon exporter and still carries the timeless elegance of Sri Lanka’s colonial past.
Surrounded by green nature and fresh natural breezes, the villa offers a quiet and relaxing stay away from the busy beach, while the ocean is still close by. From the hilltop, the view stretches far into the distance, especially at sunrise and sunset when the sky turns beautiful shades of gold and red.
Carefully restored while preserving its original character, this three room Villa blends antique charm with modern comfort. Spacious ‘meda midula’ with a small plunge pool with a Jacuzzi , airy rooms, a spacious living room, terrace, balcony, cosy corners and garden invite guests to slow down and enjoy the surroundings, whether with a morning cup of tea or an evening watching the lights flicker along the distant shore.
‘This small villa is truly a haven for travellers who want to escape city life. The quiet setting, combined with the sounds of birds and the whisper of trees, creates a soothing atmosphere that feels worlds away from everyday routine. It is an ideal getaway for a family of six to seven or a group of friends. Our idea is to ensure strict privacy for our guests’ said Manusha Perera, Managing Director of Treasure Crest Villa.
Each room opens to sweeping natural views and offers panoramic vistas, while being equipped with modern comforts such as tea and coffee-making facilities, safes and air conditioning. Ensuite bathrooms feature hot water showers and locally crafted cinnamon soap, while elegant beds draped in local fabrics and traditional mosquito nets add a touch of timeless charm.
The property features a year-round outdoor swimming pool, sun terrace, and free WiFi. Additional amenities include air-conditioning, a fully equipped kitchen and a washing machine.
‘For those who enjoy cooking, the kitchen is available, ideal for experimenting with local ingredients, preparing something light or arranging a quick bite for an outdoor session. Our Chef Lakmal is always ready to assist guests with their culinary requirements’ said Maxumus Amerasinghe, the host of the property.
‘Guests can choose between a traditional Sri Lankan or Western breakfast. Whether it’s eggs and bacon or prawn curry with roti, every meal begins with a platter of fresh fruit and a glass of freshly squeezed juice, the perfect start to a day in paradise’ he added.
Lunch tends to be traditional
Sri Lankan curry and rice (it is rarely ‘hot’ but the spiciness is always adjustable). ‘We pride ourselves in serving the best for miles around and in creating a repast which reflects the balance traditional to the meal. All our chutneys are homemade’.
Excursions and tours are another highlight of ‘Treasure Crest Villa’. Unawatuna, an attractive sandy bay popular for lounging and snorkelling, is close by, while the palm-fringed shores of Jungle Beach, Dalawella Beach, Talpe Beach and Mirissa are all just a short drive away, making them perfect for water-sports lovers. Whale and dolphin watching in Mirissa can also be arranged as a half-day tour on request.
Beyond the coastline, travellers can explore the rich heritage of Galle Fort and nearby colonial landmarks. Nature enthusiasts can visit Kottawa Rainforest, spice and cinnamon plantations, and the renowned Hinduangoda Tea Estate, famous for producing some of the world’s most expensive white tea. Cultural and unique experiences await at the Martin Wickramasinghe Museum, the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project, Madol Duwa in Koggala, stilt fishing in Ahangama, the dramatic Hummanaya Blow Hole in Tangalle and the serene Yatagala Raja Maha Viharaya. Together, these attractions offer unforgettable experiences for true travellers exploring
Sri Lanka’s southern coast.
