Trinity down Nalanda to enter semis
Trinity College fought back after conceding a first innings lead to Nalanda College, to record an outright win by 69 runs in the quarter-final encounter of the Inter-School Under-19 Division I Tier ‘A’ Cricket Tournament at the FTZ ground in Katunayake yesterday.
It was skipper Dimantha Mahavithana and Aadham Hilmy, who together turned the game into their favour as they helped Trinity end the second day on 274-9 batting the second time. The final day’s play saw Trinity making a declaration on that same score to set Nalanda a victory target of 264 runs, and Nalanda in their run chase fell into deep trouble after losing their top five wickets with the total on 55.
Though the late order batsmen put in some stiff resistance, Nalanda were unable to make any impression and succumbed to the right and left arm spin combination of Chaniru Senaratne and Kanilka Anthony, who together shared 10 wickets to bowl their opponents out for 194 runs.
Meanwhile in another quarter-final encounter between traditional rivals Prince of Wales College and St. Sebastian’s College at Mt. Lavinia, half tons from Oshan Silva, Suwahas Fernando and Gawesha Fernando put the Cambrians on top at the end of first day’s play on 295-5. This match will continue today.
