Four Colombo Port workers die within 14 months

The Colombo Port has in the past 14 months recorded deaths of at least four of its workers with the latest incident reported this month.

Officials at the port believe it to be due to the negligence of the vessel operators to maintain a proper protective fence.

On February 6 this year a signalman Sarath Sandalal (57) working for the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) working at the MV SOL Stride, a Singapore registered vessel’s 18th bay had given the signal to close the hatch cover of the container. Just before closing the hatch it is believed that he must have tried to move to the protective area when his shoe got entangled in rope placed on the ground there and had fallen to the deck of the vessel at 38 ft.

Officials at SLPA stated that it is the responsibility of the vessel operator to maintain a protective fence in that location where it was not there. The incident had taken place soon after loading of the vessel had completed and Mr. Sandalal had given the signal to close the hatch cover of the container.

Among the other three incidents early this year a technician of the port had been run over by a prime mover that had just taken off when he was fixing it under it at the Mahapola Ports and Maritime Training Institute.

Last year a container had fallen on a prime mover within the CICT terminal killing the driver. In another incident in December last year another prime mover driver been killed which was blamed on self- negligence.
