This Christmas season, audiences are invited into a world of music and magic with A Classic Christmas 2025, a large-scale festive concert taking place today, December 21, at the Musaeus College auditorium. Headed by Billy Fernando and Devashrie de Silva, the production assembles an extensive line-up of performers for what promises to be one of the most immersive Christmas concerts of the season.
Now in its second year, A Classic Christmas began as a passion project born out of a shared love for the season and its profound meaning. “We’re fans of the whole idea of Christmas – not just the festivities, but what it represents,” says Devashrie. “We wanted to create something meaningful and entertaining for families, something that felt special to experience together.”
The response to the inaugural edition last year was strong enough to inspire a return, this time with even greater ambition. Rather than presenting a standard concert format, A Classic Christmas 2025 blends elements of show business and musical theatre, weaving music together with storytelling, visual design and subtle theatrical moments.
“There is definitely a sense of narrative,” Devashrie explains. “It’s not a full musical theatre production but storytelling plays a big role. We’re very intentionally looking at Christmas through a child’s eyes – that sense of wonder, imagination, and magic that can sometimes get lost.”
That sense of wonder extends to the structure of the show itself, which is designed as a wholesome family experience. Visual effects, soundscapes and theatrical touches are woven throughout the evening, creating moments that resonate with both children and adults.
Musically, the concert spans a wide spectrum. Audiences can expect influences ranging from pop, jazz, blues, soul, world music, semi-classical, and even touches of rock, all centred firmly on Christmas repertoire. While the programme is predominantly in English, it also features Sinhala songs, including Billy Fernando’s much-loved festive classic Seethala Sulanga, offering a local resonance within a global musical context.
The performance line-up further elevates the scale of the production. Alongside Billy and Devashrie, the show features 2Forty2, who will present a dedicated spot during the concert, as well as the Methodist College Senior Choir and the Gateway College Junior Choir. Adding another distinctive layer is MAYA, an all-girl vocal ensemble whose sound brings a contemporary choral texture to the programme.
A defining feature of A Classic Christmas 2025 is its ensemble of musicians, drawn from diverse musical backgrounds and assembled specifically for this project. Rather than working with a fixed band, the production brings together versatile musicians who contribute their individual expertise to carefully crafted arrangements. Unlike traditional theatre settings where musicians often remain in the background, this concert places strong emphasis on the musicians themselves, making them a visible and integral part of the performance.
Backed by a passionate production team and a shared belief in the power of art during the festive season, A Classic Christmas 2025 sets out to offer audiences more than just a concert. It is an invitation to slow down and rediscover the joy and wonder at the heart of the season.
