View(s):Can a nation truly prosper by merely celebrating arrests?
In Sri Lanka, the most prominent news recently – for the President, the government, the police, and much of the media – has been the arrest of a woman accused of aiding in the killing of a criminal. But what does this say about the state of our country?
We are governed by a political party that has failed to deliver on its promises made to the people during the last 54 years (1971–2025). Now, instead of addressing its own shortcomings, the government appears to rely on the Police and the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption to distract the public and mask its incapacity.
And yet, a small segment of the population – those who helped bring this government to power – continues to cheer these so-called victories. Yes, it is right to punish wrongdoers, whether they are petty criminals or corrupt politicians. Justice must be served. But can a nation truly prosper by merely celebrating arrests, while deeper systemic failures go unaddressed?

Please make investment transactions also possible online for us senior citizens
As a senior citizen, I enjoy the online system, especially when dealing with banks as it is convenient and hassle-free; no travelling to banks, no wasting time, and quick service, etc.
Unlike in other countries, here senior citizens are not equipped with proper facilities to help them conduct their matters in a convenient manner. Wherever possible, they should be treated with much more care and should be comfortable in their activities.
Sometimes we face daunting experiences when we happen to go to a bank. It is also so difficult to travel by bus. If you take your own car, most of the time, there is no parking available. Taking these considerations into account, we senior citizens opt for the online system to avoid travelling.
I have been enjoying this online facility for quite a long period, but I have recently encountered a certain problem, where I have been compelled to go to the bank.
When you open an FD investment or something similar, where we have to nominate someone (essential for senior citizens especially), we are compelled to go to the bank and execute the correspondence. My point here is: what is the point of executing an investment online, if we cannot nominate a person online? Surely there should be a system where legal documents could be sent by post or through some other means.
I must stress that we are not appealing for any monetary gains here, but our convenience. This vital obligation should be looked into by the relevant authorities.
